Alvarez & Marsal Adds Shepley and Sugrue as Managing Directors in Disputes and Investigations Practice

Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) announced the appointments of Joe Shepley and Michael Sugrue as Managing Directors with its Disputes and Investigations practice.  Shepley’s and Sugrue’s hiring furthers A& M’s ability to address the market’s growing data privacy and eDiscovery concerns globally.
 
Shepley specializes in information governance and data privacy. He has worked across multiple industries, including healthcare, life sciences, financial services, energy, retail, manufacturing, and insurance. Mr. Shepley focuses on records and information management assessments and leads program modernization, data minimization, benchmarking, and large-scale data cleanup efforts. He has implemented information governance programs, in accordance with US and global regulatory retention and disposal requirements such as California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU, and New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) 500.13.
 
Sugrue advises legal, technology enterprise, and law firm clients in civil and criminal litigation, internal and regulatory investigations, as well as various cyber matters. He supports high-profile litigation cases involving alleged data spoliation and guides clients on digital forensics and complex electronic discovery matters, and cyber incident response. Mr. Sugrue has led significant forensics and e-discovery projects, along with litigation matters, for several top five financial institutions and over 100 projects for one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies.

Prior to joining A&M, Shepley served as a Managing Director with Ankura Consulting Group in Chicago, designing and launching that firm’s Records and Information Management (RIM) service line.
 
Previously, Sugrue served as a Managing Director at Stroz Friedberg LLC (now Aon Cyber Solutions). Additionally, he has practiced law at Latham & Watkins and Goodwin Procter, managing several challenging cross-border investigations.

Shepley earned a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in history of Christianity from the University of Chicago. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional U.S. (CIPP/US), a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, and anAdvisor for the Health Sector Coordinating Council Working Group – Risk Assessment (TG-2).
 
A former Fulbright Scholar, Sugrue earned a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in New York and Massachusetts.
