Thomas Kim, Ronald Sussman Lead TMA During 25th Anniversary Year

January 08, 2013, 07:12 AM

Thomas M. Kim, CTP, managing director and founder of r2 advisors llc of Denver, began his term as president of the Turnaround Management Association on Jan. 1.

Kim took over for 2012 TMA President Ronald R. Sussman, partner, Cooley LLP, New York. Sussman moves to chairperson on the TMA Executive Board, replacing Mark S. Indelicato, partner, Hahn & Hessen LLP, New York, who transitions to immediate past chairperson.

Kim takes the helm of TMA after serving on the TMA Executive Board as vice president of membership (2012) and vice president of finance (2010-2011). He also was the president of the TMA Rocky Mountain Chapter from 2004-2005.

“I am very proud to have the honor of serving as TMA president during this milestone year,” says Kim. “TMA has experienced tremendous growth during its first quarter century and I look forward to guiding the organization as we celebrate the past 25 years and prepare for continued success in the next 25.”

A Certified Turnaround Professional with more than 20 years of experience with underperforming businesses, Kim focuses on the middle-market. He provides advice to businesses that are facing important transitions resulting from financial or operational issues. He also assists creditors and equity owners with interests in distressed businesses by providing advice to resolve these situations through workouts, acquisitions, and dispositions. Prior to founding r² advisors llc, Kim worked for a private investment company that targeted special assets transactions. Although retired from law practice since 2001, Kim began his professional career as a bankruptcy lawyer.

Kim succeeds Sussman, a partner in the Bankruptcy & Restructuring practice at Cooley LLP. Sussman has been named one of the “Super Lawyers of New York" every year from 2006 through 2012 and has represented clients in some of the most significant bankruptcy cases nationally and abroad, including: Enron, United Airlines, Blockbuster, Mervyn’s, Montgomery Ward, Pacific Metro/Kinkade Gallery, Gottschalks, EPV Solar, The Sharper Image, CompUSA, and Loehmann’s.
