Alvarez & Marsal Tax Expands Global Talent, Names Five New Managing Directors Across UK and U.S.

Alvarez & Marsal Tax, an affiliate of leading global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), announced the appointment of UK-based Steve Henshaw, Anthony Whatling, and Tom Lobb, alongside US-based Jerry N. Smith, and Tim Trifilo as Managing Directors. These new hires represent the continuous growth efforts of the practice, following on its recent expansion into Switzerland with the hire of Dr. Kersten Honold, as the Swiss Tax practice leader, and into Australia, led by Sean Keegan.

Collectively, Messrs. Henshaw, Whatling, Lobb, Smith and Trifilo bring a century of global experience across multiple geographies, industries, tax practices and procedures. Their combined focus furthers A&M’s mission to provide clients, ranging from high net-worth individuals, family offices, institutional investors, private equity (PE) and Hedge Funds to mid-market and global enterprises, with the broadest portfolio of tax services.

Messrs. Henshaw’s, Whatling’s, Lobb’s, Smith’s and Trifilo’s collective tax advisory experience spans the indirect tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, personal tax affairs of high-net-worth clients, and tax implications of cross-border transactions. They advise clients on intricate local and regional tax regulations, structuring transactions, negotiations with tax authorities and evolving tax laws including international issues and real estate investment trust (REIT) structures.

Their specific expertise includes:

Henshaw - Advising privately owned, private equity backed, and large multinational companies on indirect tax matters, including transaction due diligence and structuring as well as negotiating with His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) on value-added tax (VAT).

Whatling - Advising private banks and wealth managers on how to design and implement banking and investment services for non-UK domiciled clients.

Lobb - Guiding listed groups, private equity funds and their portfolio businesses on navigating base erosion and profit sharing (BEPS) Pillar 2 rules impacts.

Smith - Structuring cross-border acquisitions and divestitures international joint ventures, tax-free spin-offs, financings and internal corporate restructurings.

Trifilo - Advising on fund formation, public and private equity offerings, capital structures, real estate investment trust (REIT) formation and qualification issues.
