Used Equipment Inventory Falls During Machinery Market Lull

August 11, 2025, 07:54 AM

Inventory levels of used construction equipment on Machinery Trader and other Sandhills Global platforms shifted from a sideways to a downward trend in July, according to the latest Sandhills market reports. This shift reflects a typical summertime lull in the machinery market. Used crawler excavators and mini excavators led the way in inventory decreases in the heavy-duty and medium-duty equipment markets, respectively.

The market reports cover construction equipment, farm machinery, trucks, and trailers on Sandhills platforms. In agricultural equipment markets, used 100-plus-horsepower tractor inventory levels, asking prices, and auction values continued a downward trend in July, while used compact tractor auction values are trending up. In transportation markets, high returns on individual used sleeper trucks are driving heavy-duty truck values higher, while day cab asking values trend downward.

The key metric in all of Sandhills’ market reports is the Sandhills Equipment Value Index (EVI). Buyers and sellers can use the information in the Sandhills EVI to monitor equipment markets and maximize returns on acquisition, liquidation, and related business decisions. The Sandhills EVI data include equipment available in auction and retail markets and model-year equipment actively in use. EVI spread measures the percentage difference between asking and auction values.
